HIGHLIGHTS FINAL MEXICO VS USA – 2nd World University American Football Championship 2016
Monterrey, Mexico – Team Mexico is proclaimed back-to-back champion of the World University Championship of American Football after defeating Team USA 35 – 7 in the last game of the tournament. Both teams arrived to this match undefeated with 3 wins and 0 loses.
The American team was the one who opened the score in their first drive. James Banks ran for 79 yards to get the first and goal and two plays later the QB Elgin Hilliard Jr. ran 9 yards to get the first and only TD of the game for his team.
The Mexican squad tried to respond in their first offensive series but they were stopped by the American defense. Rodrigo Alonso Arias kicked a 38-yards field goal that was not good.
From there, the American team disappeared from this game. Both offense and defense were clearly surpassed by their Mexican counterpart who got their first points by the means of Marcelo Gonzalez Solorzano who ran for 8 yards to get the first 6 points of the game for Mexico.
The first quarter ended with the score tied 7-7.
The game got physical and the defenses were dominating for most of the second quarter. CB Juan Manuel Marquez Tamayo got the first turnover of the game after intercepting a pass by Maclane Roche in the yard 31. The Mexican offense did not miss the chance and tricked the American defense with a double-pass play.
QB Mata Charles sent a lateral pass to WR Jhovany Haro who completed a 32-yards pass to Leonardo Magallanes, giving the lead to Mexico 14-7.
Mexico continued strong at defense and stopped the next drive by the American. The Mexicans got a key first down in their next series after the American special team hit the punt kicker, giving away the home team the opportunity to score again. It was a 21-yard pass by Mate Charles to Jorge Eduardo Retana to extend the lead 21-7 with 2:15 on the clock.
Team USA got to the Mexican 36 yard line and with 16 seconds left in the half time and attempted a 51 yard field goal but the Mexican special team blocked it and recovered the ball to go to the half time with a 2 scores advantage.
The teams came back to start the 3rd quarter and once again the inspired Mexican offense completed a 75 yards drive with a short run by the QB Mata Charles to increase the advantage 28-7.
The Mexican defense kept dominating the American Offense as well as the special teams. Mexico blocked a punt kick and recovered the ball inside the yard 10 of Team USA. Fernando Mejia ran 6 yards to score the last TD of the game.
Mexico looked impressive, scored 35 unanswered points and defeat Team USA to proclaim, for the second time in a row, Champions of this edition of the World University Championship of American Football.
QB Jesus Mata Charles was Mexico’s MVP, while RB James Banks was the MVP of the game for Team USA.
